Grades K and 1

  1. Learn rules of the library and check-out procedures.
  2. Care for library materials properly.
  3. Practice appropriate library behavior.
  4. Hear stories, poetry, and book talks to develop an appreciation of literature.
  5. Be aware of Caldecott Awards and other awards such as the Washington Children's Choice Picture Book Award and the Coretta Scott King Award for illustrator.
  6. Identify a book's cover and spine.
  7. Learn the difference between fiction and non-fiction.
  8. Locate easy, fiction, non-fiction, and other age-appropriate library materials.
  9. Introduce the online catalog as a way to find material
  10. Locate call number on the computer screen.
  11. Learn the significance between call number and the location on the shelf.

Grade 2

Grade 3

  1. Hear stories, poetry, and book talks to develop an appreciation of literature.
  2. Learn how the call number for FIC is determined.
  3. Review author and title function in the electronic catalogue.
  4. Introduce Dewey Decimal Classifaction System.
  5. Find call number in the electronic catalogue.
  6. Using call number, locate fiction books on the shelf.
  7. Using call number, locate non-fiction books on the shelf.
  8. Locate biography books on the shelf.
  9. Find information for teacher-directed topics or projects.
  10. Introduced to the multimedia Encarta Encyclopedia on the CD-ROM drive.
  11. View filmstrips and videos.
  12. Hear authors.

Grade 4

  1. Practice and extend searching skills on the electronic catalogue and CD-ROM's (e.g., Encarta).
  2. Review author and title function in the electronic catalogue.
  3. Learn elements of the subject and keyword search functions.
  4. Review the Dewey Decimal Classifaction System.
  5. Locate FIC and NF books on the shelves using call numbers.
  6. Distinguish between a dictionary and an encyclopedia.
  7. Locate and become familiar these and other reference books.
  8. Review and locate biographies, autobiographies and collective biographies.
  9. Learn about the history of the book.
  10. Hear book talks, stories, and poetry.
  11. Search for information for teacher-directed topics or projects.
  12. Vote on Young Readers Choice Books.
  13. View filmstrips and videos.
  14. Hear authors.

Grade 5

  1. Practice and extend searching skills on the electronic catalogue including CD-ROM's.
  2. Review Dewey Decimal Classifaication System.
  3. Using call numbers, continue locating books on shelves.
  4. Introduce Readers Guide to Periodical Literature.
  5. Introduce the World Almanac.
  6. Conduct research for teacher-directed topics or projects.
  7. Hear book talks.

Grade 6

  1. Practice the use of the Readers Guide to Periodical Literature.
  2. Practice the use of the World Almanac.

  4. Learn to discriminate among various encyclopedias.

  6. Introduce concept of community resources for non-written information.
