Writing was at done at first still on scrolls, but soon it became easier to cut it and form books.

In the middle ages, monks in monasteries made copies of books and kept them in book cupboards, or book cases.  The word “bibliotecha” in Greek means “book cases” and so does “librarium” in Latin

By the 1200s universities were started that had their own libraries, spreading reading and writing beyond the church.  And in the 1440s, Gutenberg invented the printing press and movable type, making the production of books much easier, and books more available to the common person. In 1800s came the invention of the cylinder printing press increasing book production even higher. Books were everywhere, and  libraries separate from church and universities were started, the beginning of the modern public library both in Europe and the United States.  The Boston Public Library was opened in 1854, the New York Public Library in 1895.
