The
maps of Elijah McGee The McGee family had been making and collecting maps,
especially pirate maps for many years, and with the supposed help of Daniel Defoe
under the pen name of Charles Johnson, wrote A General History of the Robberies
and Murders of the Most Notorious Pyrates.
| Piracy
has existed since sailors have sailed the seas. The
Greeks and Romans suffered for centuries from the pirates of the Barbary Coast,
especially the Barbarossa brothers, where they found great harbors to hide, particularly
Algiers. These pirates were often called corsairs because that was the type
of ship they sailed. UD
| | | Later
from the 1600s to the early 1700s another kind of pirate called "buccaneers" found
the perfect place to plunder: the Caribbean. With
its vast number of small islands, the Caribbean had many harbors in which to hide,
rest, repair ships, and restock supplies without being found. BR
| | One
pirate, Captain John Rackham, later known as "Calico Jack" Rackham for his habit
of wearing simple cotton and not fancy silks, had a home on Cuba and would go
pillaging about the other islands. There were also many ships coming from Europe
into the area, most so large they could not follow the smaller pirate ships into
the shallow lagoons and inlets. TW
| The
Golden Age of Piracy began in the late 17th century on Tortuga, or Turtle Island,
when the Spanish tried to drive off all the "buccaneers" hiding there. At first
they were an unorganized group, but facing the one enemy of the Spanish, they
joined forces according to a strict code of conduct, electing captains, and began
taking any passing ships first only for their food, but later their stores of
silks, slaves, jewels and gold. LK
| | | The
other European powers sent "privateers" to capture these pirates who were stealing
their goods. One privateer, Sir Henry Morgan, kept for himself what he took from
the pirates and hid his treasure on various islands EP
| It
was Elijah McGee who made these treasure maps for these pirates such as Sir Henry
Morgan and Captain Jack Rackham. He was also hired by notorious female pirates
Mary Read and Anne Bonny who murdered and pillaged their way through Nassau and
the Antilles. IN
| | | The
French eventually took possession of Tortuga, but the pirates just moved westward
to Jamaica. On Jamaica, Port Royal sat on the southern end of the island,
both the richest and wickedest city in the world, and the center of pirate activity
for many years. But, in 1692 an earthquake destroyed most of the city, most of
it plunging into the sea. (fell in the sea) SQ
| One
of the most famous pirates was Blackbeard, formerly Edward Teach. He often sailed
the area around Bermuda with its Port Royal and Great Turkle Bay. He was famous
for braiding his beard with colorful ribbons and weaving gunpowder into them which
he would light for its frightening effect. He did not hesitate to kill anyone,
even his own men to maintain his fearful reputation. Once he shot a crewman under
a table crippling him in the knee. CY
| | That
same man Israel Hands, was one of the few suvivors when Blackbeard and his men
were later captured and killed. He swore revenge against his former captain and
once back in London, met with Daniel Defoe, then writing his story of Robinson
Crusoe, but also a friend of Elijah McGee. Turning against his fellow pirates,
Hands worked with Defoe and McGee under the assumed name of Charles Johnson to
collect the maps of several pirates, hoping to print them in a book, and sell
them to the privateers hunting the pirates and thus making their fortune. Often
the maps would be embellished with signs and symbols of the sea, such as mermaids.

| | | Defoe
died and it seems McGee spent much time abroad, perhaps using the maps himself
to find the buried treasures. Then there was a fire, maps disappeared, but there
was mention of a 14th map .......... | | Find
