Tips for searching the internet - OSLIS learn how to....
  • List keywords
    • be specific, but use more than one, synonyms
    • find broader terms, broader subjects or topics
    • find narrower terms, more precise words
    • check spelling
    • use lowercase letters unless it is a Proper Noun
  • Choose the best search tool:
    • subject directories - for broad topics
    • keyword search engine - for specific words
    • metasearch engines - to search many at once
  • Use Boolean seach terms: AND, OR, NOT (+ or -)
  • Use Quotes for phrases: "downhill skiing"
  • Use Find (Ctrl F) to quickly find your information
  • Evaluate the sites you find
  • Try other search tools
  • Try other resources: books, people, organizations-- maybe the internet is not the right place to be searching at all
